Church – the symphony

A reminder: this church in Corinth were struggling with some hierarchy spirit and much division. Basing their evidence on the spiritual gift they had some members were seeing themselves as more important than others. Having gone through a list of the spiritual gifts explaining they all come from the one Spirit and for the common good and that no one has achieved anything to receive a gift, Paul explains that for the church to be what it is meant to be then diversity is essential.

“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized byone Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.” (1 Corinthians 12 v 12-14)

Through the Spirit we become part of something greater than ourselves. The Church isn’t just a one-gift church but rather made up of different gifts no matter what ethnicity or social class it is made up of.

One of my claim to fames is I achieved an ‘O’ level in music! What I strangely remember is Beethoven’s Sonata called Pathetique. I think because though I always thought the word meant pathetic when it means passion I also could play the opening bars!

But it is the opening movement that is remembered more than the Sonata itself. In fact that has been one of the developments of our times. Most can recall movements but they don’t know where they come from. They sit independent to the whole composition. The rest being discarded, ignored and totally forgotten.

Local Churches and even streams of churches/networks/denominations have become similar to movements and other than a Churches Together annual service have forgotten the symphony or sonata that they belong to.

There are 3 or 4 movements in a symphony or sonata. Each are different in pace, different keys, sometimes there is a correlation to the opening but not always. The movements build independently to the final movement where the composer is envisaging everything coming together journeying to the great crescendo as the audience stand to their feet in the auditorium with rapturous applause.

The church should remember it is a movement. The composer created you as a movement. Some are loud and some are quiet, fast, slow, but all are needed. The second movement cannot say let us get rid of the third movement because it is not in the same key. They have no voice. It is the composer’s voice. He is the Head. His name, Jesus.

The Holy Spirit’s design for the Church is not to distribute spiritual gifts for competition but for individual purpose and a unified community.

In one sentence Paul strips away any thought of:-

  • Spiritual pride with the gifts.
  • Disappointment in not having certain gifts.
  • Division within the church over the gifts.

Having explored each of the nine gifts Paul lists here (and there’s more) he repeats what he said in his opening line in v7.

“All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.” 1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭11‬ ‭

  • Gifts come from the same person, the Holy Spirit. They originate from Him. They are His gifts. They belong to Him. They are His work. Let me add more emphasis – they are not ours.
  • Gifts come as the Holy Spirit determines. We can ask for the gifts and Paul will encourage us to do this later. But it’s not like we pick and choose what we want. It’s what He wants and ultimately what will bring glory to God.
  • Gifts are given to each one. Every Spirit-filled believer is given gifts. No one is gift-less. The Holy Spirit knows which gifts to give to which person.

When these gifts are respected and released they bring the reason why we are placed in the Church. They give purpose.

Even more importantly we know we are contributing to the unity and purpose of the Church.

Today let these truths be known whichever part of God’s church you serve in.

The interpretation of tongues

I’ve seen this gift being used beautifully. In a public setting after the gift of public tongues   Is given comes a powerful equivalent (not a translation) of what was just spoken. Perhaps we could call it a response. During listening to the public gift of tongues there is a heightened expectation that the interpretation will be coming either from the same person or someone else in the room. The Holy Spirit will be responding soon to give understanding and we await with a longing for what would be said.

“to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.” 1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭10‬

Paul will be saying in chapter 14 that if we have the public gift of tongues then we must seek the interpretation gift also because when we come together publicly everything needs to be understood.

All my life the majority of times I have heard this gift in operation is what would be called an equivalent to prophecy. Although I know that the Holy Spirit can do what He wants to do, I cannot help think that if it is indeed prophecy (God speaking to man) then why not just let the prophetic gift flow. But perhaps through teaching we can understand that if tongues is for prayer, praise and giving thanks to God as the private use is in chapter 14 then the gift of interpretation is also God-ward. It is something that has been debated by many. For me, I have heard beautiful and powerful prayers that carry a prophetic edge but are given to God and these have followed the message in tongues. Every single time I have heard these I have marvelled of the impact of the gift of interpretation on the church.

Holy Spirit I humbly ask that you give this gift to me. Use me to empower your church. I reach out for the gift not only of tongues but of interpretation. Above all may Jesus be seen and glorified. Amen

Different kinds of tongues

It is to speak in a language of people or angels which has not previously been learned.

It was 11am Sunday morning, half an hour into the service and Big John stood up and spoke at length in a language very unfamiliar to me. The person next to me whispered, “the Holy Spirit is talking, wait and you will hear the message in English.” I was 14 yrs of age and learning that the Spirit spoke in an unknown language but that it could be understood in English. Big John would follow the similar pattern most Sunday mornings and usually the Spirit chose 11am to speak. I had arrived at an Elim Church.

Here in chapter 12 we have tongues mentioned as one of the gifts. A gift that my Big John had. A public gift. But in a few verses time (v30) one that not everyone will have. In chapter 14 when we get to it we will read more about the personal gift, the grace of spiritual language and how it helps us in our discipleship and a desire by Paul that we all have this gift (v5).

“to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.” 1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭10‬

Last week in the northern part of Kenya a team I was leading were praying for a group of Christians at the front of the church. They had responded to the message and were seeking more of God. As the team moved amongst them in prayer one of the members stopped totally taken by surprise because a young man was speaking English. “Let the glory of God be amongst the praises of His people.” He spoke these words twice. When we asked the leader there and then in the middle of what was going on to question the young man, we found that not only was he illiterate, but he had never spoken any English before in his life nor did he know anyone who had that language!

So why? What was going on in the move of the Holy Spirit as people were being healed by God of various sickness, as some were being saved and others set free? I’m not sure exactly but I do know that a new empowered faith came upon the team to pray for sicknesses because we knew, we had the evidence, God was here.

This gift was promised by Jesus in Mark’s gospel (16:17).

On the first day of the Church this gift was in operation.

It is listed here amongst the other gifts.

It is a gift to be received.

Like the other gifts which need each other to be effective for example faith and healing; this gift needs the next gift especially if it is the language of angels and spoken publicly.

Holy Spirit saturate my life with your presence and power as I seek this gift of tongues of men and angels. Above all I pray this for the benefit of others, for the common good, that they may know you are here. I ask for this gift not for the attention to be given to me but that Jesus will be seen and glorified. Amen.

Distinguishing between spirits

“discernment of spirits [the ability to distinguish sound, godly doctrine from the deceptive doctrine of man-made religions and cults]” AMP.

“the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit” NLT.

“the power to know whether evil spirits are speaking through those who claim to be giving God’s messages—or whether it is really the Spirit of God who is speaking” TLB.

Is this God? Is this genuine? Or is it in fact demonic and more from the spirit of the world than the Holy Spirit? This is the gift that unveils the answer to those questions.

“….to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.” (1 Corinthians 12 v 10)

We need this gift. To be able to distinguish what is true and what is false is needed. To know what is good and what is evil is needed. To know whether a person is full of the Holy Spirit or is carrying a damaging spirit is needed. Seek this gift. You need it.

John told us to test the spirits and see if they are from God.

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.” (1 John 4: 1-3)

… do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

  • Not everything you hear can be trusted and believed blindly.
  • Not everything that is inspirational is from Him even though it might make you feel good.
  • Not everything that is false looks false at first otherwise there wouldn’t be a possibility of being led astray.

… This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.

    • Everything must be filtered through this one test: Jesus is the Christ in flesh sent from God.
    • Every religious experience must come under the submission of the orthodox teaching of and about Jesus Christ.

… This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

    • Everything the Spirit of Christ does points to Jesus and if it doesn’t then it is the spirit of the antichrist.

If you’re not sure then speak to a trusted person. See what they think.

Last week I was speaking with a Church leader and his wife. He told me how his wife could see the truth in people far more than he could. He described how she had warned him about a certain leader a long time before he had betrayed him. I said that it was because she had been given the gift of discernment. This is the gift and we need it.

Satan can appear as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14).

Sometimes your friends may speak words that are not the words of God (Matthew 16:23 – ‘get behind me satan’ as Peter was trying to prevent Jesus going to the cross).

We are warned by Paul that we will know a time when the devil will do miracles and that a powerful delusion will come on unrighteous people (2 Thessalonians 2: 9-10).

    We need this gift!

Holy Spirit, I seek discernment. Help me to hear the words and see the actions of people through your heart and mind. Give me this gift so that I can discern your voice from the many opinions around my life. Show me how to compare the truth of your Word with other people’s truth and to know the difference. I cannot discern without you. I need to know what is true and what is false; what is good and what is evil; what is you Holy Spirit and what is another spirit. May Jesus be seen and glorified in my life as I discern what is good, what is from you and the direction I should take.

    Amen.

    prophecy

It is a separate gift. Some think prophecy is today simply really good preaching, with unction (love that word!) but it’s not, though really good preaching can contain this gift of prophecy within it.

“To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.” 1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭8‬-‭10‬

This is less about predicting future events (though it involves this) and more about  speaking God’s heart and mind into situations.

This special message from God is in the language of the one speaking and the one hearing. It builds up and demands a response.

It is not reliant on human thought and reasoning.

We will discover that all may prophecy (14:1) but that does not mean all are prophets. The office is inseparable from the person whilst prophecy is given for the moment. The office comes second amongst Paul’s list and yet the gift is way down the list here in this list of Paul.

Prophecy will never speak against the Bible. It will always be loving.

Prophecies can and should be delivered in your normal voice. You won’t have to pretend a super spiritual voice. Just be you.

Prophecies can be corrected and should be. Prophecies can change atmospheres of a room and bring understanding to the confused. Prophecy lifts the downhearted and sheds light for the way forward. To have prophecy is to be a conduit for the comfort of God.

Holy Spirit I desire this gift. I earnestly seek this gift. Teach me how to use it. To the situations and people around me who long for a message of encouragement, speak through me. I desire for Jesus to be glorified. I align myself with your heart and mind towards people and eagerly expect you to give me your words that will build up and empower them. Amen

    miraculous powers

Going beyond healings then we have to assume that miraculous powers cover supernatural wonders such as deliverance from demonic powers, anything that defies natural laws such as the raising of the dead.

But like the gifts of healing, the gift of faith is given also to work alongside the miraculous powers.

    These are acts of power.

Remember that a sign of the manifestation of the Holy Spirit is for the unusual to happen. The unexplainable happens.

Let me take some more time on this because it seems a far away gift for us perhaps. Are miraculous powers possible, really? Yes!

Acts 19:11 “God did extraordinary miracles through Paul”

He does not do the ordinary. He does the extraordinary through the ordinary.

He is not a human being (Numbers 23:19). He works through, in and for us humans.

Today you may be facing your greatest threat. A powerful enemy may have come against you.

But it is not what you are facing that is important but who that is in you that counts.

Think about who is in you today …

God who expresses His wrath every day (Psalm 7)

God who has set the moon and stars in place (Psalm 8)

God whose voice strikes with flashes of lightning (Psalm 29)

God who gathers the waters of the sea into jars (Psalm 33)

God who brings desolations on the earth (Psalm 46)

God who reigns over the nations (Psalm 47)

God whose chariots are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands (Psalm 68)

God who is incomparable (Psalm 89)

God who is from all eternity (Psalm 93)

God whose fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side. (Psalm 97)

Psalm 68:35 You are awesome O God in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people.

He is a great and awesome God

    In your life!

“O Sovereign Lord! You have made the heavens and earth by Your great power. Nothing is too hard for You!” (Jeremiah 32:17).

    No need too great.

No problem too big or too small.

    No enemy too powerful.

Nothing in us can constrain Him.

No task is too big for Him.

    Nothing.

    He extravagantly does the extraordinary.

Acts 19:12 “… even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to those who were ill, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.”

Paul didn’t touch the cloths for the purpose of healing. He didn’t pray over them and bless them. He didn’t send them out after an online payment. He didn’t teach others the art of the prayer cloth ministry. Paul didn’t have anything to do with the handkerchiefs and aprons. God did it.

God was moving in this Ephesian occultic culture.

    God was verifying Paul’s preaching.

We are used to such phenomena in the New Testament. The woman caught the tassels of Jesus robe and received power to her sick body (Matthew 9:20-21). Peter’s shadow would heal people (Acts 5:15). So we are not surprised by Luke the doctor’s account.

    So how did this happen?

God didn’t announce this was what He would do.

It must have started with someone inquisitive and brave enough to give it a go.

Perhaps this is easier if your culture is one of charms and magical weird happenings anyway.

Someone was so concerned for a sick loved one, whether in body or tormented in mind or spirit, they wondered if this would help.

Handkerchiefs were sweat rags used to wipe the face and aprons were work overalls that provided protection.

Did this someone visit Paul in his tent-making workshop and see the handkerchiefs of sweat from Paul’s brow and the discarded aprons on the floor and think I wonder if …?

Did this someone bring their own or the hankies and aprons of their sick loved one, with the intention of doing something that perhaps they had seen occultists try?

Luke doesn’t say and maybe that is not the important message.

What is of importance is that the extraordinary God when He is in a place miraculous powers can be given to perform unbelievable extraordinary acts.

Holy Spirit I see brokenness all around me. I live in a culture of many idols; people are blinded to what has put them in chains and cannot see their need of you. Holy Spirit break out. Come. Manifest your presence through me and with faith let my world see the extraordinary power of God and glorify Jesus. Amen

    gifts of healing

    Healings are gifts.

I know that seems obvious. However the temptation can be that healings come because of various degrees of techniques and/or our superiority to somehow do these things and more. After all didn’t Jesus say we would do what He did and more?

This is why it is crucial to understand healings are gifts and they are plural because there are many diseases.

So again let me say, healings are gifts. They are not set as a spiritual gift so that people see a human healer. They are not guaranteed so that because you may have experienced the healing gift before it means you will on the next and every occasion. Neither does it mean that if say on the next occasion a person isn’t healed the fault lies with you or more importantly them. This is a gift.

Simply put those who have this gift usually also have the gift of faith that the disease will be healed.

Those who have this gift are probably the most loving of people. Yes the gift can be abused and pride can get in the way. But those who see people healed through their prayers do so because of deep compassion and love for those who are sick.

Those who have this gift have a desire to do good for people.

And finally those who have the gifts of healing probably don’t have them all. I mean, they are not the experts of every disease. Jesus is.

Holy Spirit pour out compassion on me for people. Let my heart break for what breaks yours. Let me see what you see. Forgive me when I have turned away and ignored or walked past those who are sick. I commit to the praying for those who are ill. As I step out grant me to experience gifts of healing so that people see Jesus and glorify Him. Amen.

    Faith

This is not the faith that brings us into salvation.

This is not your ability to believe for something. But in its simplest form it is when God adds faith to your faith supernaturally. It is given for a task.

This faith is the undoubting assurance that what the Holy Spirit has nudged you to do can and will happen. It is the extraordinary steps taken firstly by God; we don’t exercise this gift as we desire but at the discretion of the Spirit. This is not having faith in faith but in the Holy Spirit who has nudged us to speak, to go and to act. This faith believes for miracles, healings, the impossibilities to be possible. If ever one gift was mission-focused it is this gift. Why would church planters decide to plant in the toughest of areas? The gift of Faith.

Holy Spirit I ask that whenever you think I need this gift of faith you give it to me. As I step into this world where people need Jesus and you show me knowledge of them and give me wisdom to know how to speak to them and lead them into the way of God then give me faith to believe that this person will be saved, that person will be healed and another will be delivered.  As I step forward and receive this gift let Jesus be seen and glorified. Amen.

    Message of knowledge

This is the knowledge of information previously unknown and imparted by God supernaturally.

“To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.” 1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭8‬-‭10‬ ‭

Knowledge has to do with the discovery of truth while wisdom has to do with its application in life.

It cannot have any known information beforehand. It is completely shooting in the dark but you’re not because God is revealing the facts, information, details whether in the past or the present and most probably when you are praying with that person.

Holy Spirit I ask that today you will give me messages of knowledge that those people I meet I will see them as divine appointments made by you. Give me the insight I need whether through pictures, words, insights into their lives and then give me the wisdom to lead them into beautiful new chapters of their lives with you . Give me the courage to speak up and say what you show me and above all let Jesus be seen and glorified. Amen.
