No one said it would be easy!

No one was listening.
They didn’t change their lifestyle one bit.
He was being plotted against.
Even people from his home town, wanted him dead.
On the verge of giving up, he appealed to God to do something.

JEREMIAH 12

Surely God makes things easier.
That’s the gospel isn’t it?

“If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses? If you stumble in safe country, how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?”, v5.
This is God’s answer followed by some worse news:
Your own family are against you.

We need to find a way through the thickets and be able to compete with horses. That’s the point. This Christian missionary life is tough. God wants us to find a way to overcome, to keep going.
The way is stamina.

Tired of Jeremiah already?!

11 chapters in and maybe all his heavy prophesying is getting way too much. No one likes a hell, fire and brimstone man, not for a morning devotion anyway. So what can we do? We can shut the Bible or read from a different section, something lighter and more positive. Jeremiah’s generation tried to shut him up just like perhaps we are tempted to do. However, they plotted to kill him to permanently remove him, akin to us ripping out the book of Jeremiah from the Bible altogether!
But they did not count on the watchful gaze of God. He showed Jeremiah what he could not see, the plot to kill him and that it came from members of his own home town.
5 small questions to answer today:
Do you only want ‘nice’ words from the Lord?
Are you offended easily?
When opposition comes from your own peers, friends and family will you hold on the Lord?
How do you dignify an attack on yourself?
How does the Lord reveal things to you?

Keep Jeremiah open, let God continue to speak through Him to you, only 40 chapters to go!

Decisions!

What do I do?
Where shall I go?
How will it work out?
If I do this what are the consequences?
Will I still be in control with this decision?
Will this cost me?
What? Where? Why? When? How?

JEREMIAH 10
Facing a looming exile into Babylon Jeremiah prays, “it is not for man to direct his steps,” v23.

Are you making a decision today? You may be facing insurmountable challenges. His prayer encourages us to trust God to make the way clear for us to overcome these challenges.
Thomas Merton, priest and theologian, wrote what became known as “the Merton Prayer”. Pray this prayer today.

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

It was an outrageous boast.
But we are familiar with such.
We live in a world of big is better, more is greater, louder, larger, so many powerful words are used to describe how we are the best. Come to us. We reach out, we give, we make things happen, we are, we are all that you need.
I speak of the Church.

JEREMIAH 9

Are you wise? Do people come to you for problem-solving? Don’t talk about it.
Are you strong? Do people marvel at your ability to get through tough times? Don’t talk about it.
Are you rich? Do people love your testimony of how God has blessed you with the ability to make money? Don’t talk about it.
Talk about this: God.
Talk about knowing Him.
Talk about how He loves and treats people.
Gossip Him. Speak of yourself less. He is far more interesting than all of us put together!
v23-24.

CHINA IN TEARS

JEREMIAH 8
You who are my Comforter in sorrow, my heart is faint within me, v18.

One of the most popular bars in the Chinese city of Nanjing has only a sofa, a few tables, and tissues—, a lot of tissues. A recent World news report highlighted the city’s first “cry bar,” where customers can sit and cry for £3 per hour and it is growing in popularity. Owner Luo Jun says he opened the bar when clients of his last business said they often wanted to cry but didn’t know when or where it would be appropriate to do so.
The world has gone bonkers!

You may be stifling a cry or actually find yourself able to shout it out loud.

Back in china, God’s people are truly in sorrow…

“Church members, lawyers and Christians visiting the family of detained Protestant Pastor Zhang Shaojie were beaten, harassed and detained by “hired thugs”, police and government agencies on 23 and 24 December 2013.
On 23 December, Pastor Cao Nan of Shenzhen, who had travelled to Nanle in Henan province to conduct a service to pray for and rally support for Pastor Zhang’s case, was dragged from his car by local police, who beat him. He was then taken to a police station where he had pepper spray sprayed into his eyes.” CSW.

How do they wipe their tears when their heart is faint?

HELL ON EARTH.

Last week we had the disturbing news from the Philippines of children being used by their parents for online sexual activities. Incredulous to think I just typed and you just read the word ‘parents’!
Clearly something is wrong when parents are willing to sacrifice their children for their own personal gain! Hell on earth.
Today I read an article regarding parents who mutilate their own daughters in the name of culture, Hell on earth.

JEREMIAH 7

Jeremiah is appalled to his core at what people are doing. Even more so with it being God’s people. He complains about their turning back to idolatrous worship but also brings warning of judgment for their child sacrifice in the valley of Ben Himmon.
That any parent is possible of such a thing is beyond all of us. But it is what happened. In the valley of Himmon the first born children were sacrificed by their parents as sacrifices to gods. This valley became hell on earth.
How God’s people followed suit and why is beyond us and that of even God who says “nor did it enter my mind” that they were capable of it, v31.
After the Babylonian exile the Jews turned this valley into a rubbish dump where fires were continually seen burning the waste of the city. Executed criminals were also burnt here. Hell on earth.
Even in Jesus day it was still referred to as hell. Jesus called this valley by the Greek name Gehenna in Matthew 5:22.
A few years ago I was blessed to be in Jerusalem with a team and I looked out onto this valley. There was no rubbish. It was beautiful. There was no evidence of evil. It looked normal.
There is still hell on earth today in many places where people commit evil even though they may think it normal.
I believe in hell. Those who commit hell if they do not find God’s grace at some point will be thrown away like rubbish into the Valley. Hell on earth becoming life in Hell.

CROSS-ROADS

Judgment is looming for Jerusalem, an army is coming, we are reading gloomy chapters at the moment.
However yet again there are hidden pearls of treasure if we would slow our pace of reading.
Jerusalem did not see these pearls, will we?

JEREMIAH 6

This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ v16

Stand and look
I have just watched a tv debate where an atheist used the theory that because she can speak to someone on her mobile device in Australia in a second only shows that those who still hold to old-fashioned beliefs such as God are bonkers. The advancement of technology, it’s speed, attention to detail, it’s accuracy is truly startling. But God is asking you to slow it down. To stop. Find some time to stand and look. Observe and view what can not be viewed at 70mph.

Ask and walk
What did we do before the satnav? We asked for directions. Except if you are a man in which case we got lost. Men are so thankful for this development for to ask stupidly appears weak. We know the way. We know what to do. Leave it to me. But all that is fallacy. God says ask about the ancient paths. How did the older generation walk with God? What values did they hold to? What decisions did they make? Walk in these ways. Not all that is modern is best.

Rest not fight
The inner man, our soul need not be restless nor agitated. As I write this I think of one person I know who has not been part of a worshipping community because of the fight that has gone on within their soul for over a decade now. Find rest in God. Lay the fight down. Stop resisting and surrender.

CROSS-ROADS. Roads to and from the cross. Pearls. Pay attention to them.

SAND ON THE SEASHORE

The pictures of the many towns along the British coast are etched in our mind of the sheer power of the sea. It is frighteningly awesome. A powerful energy that is attractive and devastating, which breaks into pieces anything that stands in its way. Does this prove that nothing is more powerful than the sea?

JEREMIAH 5
“Should you not tremble in my presence? I made the sand a boundary for the sea, an everlasting barrier it cannot cross. The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail; they may roar, but they cannot cross it, v22.

The sea, symbolically known throughout the Bible as something to be feared is seen as under the command of Gods laws and subject to the sand.

What do you fear? Is it the sea?
Are you being knocked about? Are the attacks coming like wave after wave crashing in on you? Is your circumstance speaking louder than you can think?
There is an unfailing boundary which commands the wind and waves no more. The sea may rise and shout but the sand resists its pressure.
What is this powerful sand?
A recent newspaper article stated: “Viewed at a magnification of over 250 times real life, tiny grains of sand are shown to be delicate, colourful structures as unique as snowflakes. When seen well beyond the limits of human eyesight, the miniature particles are exposed as fragments of crystals, spiral fragments of shells and crumbs of volcanic rock.”

So what can we learn?
Do not fear the loudest noise or the biggest scenario. Fear Him who made sand with its complexities and smallness which can resist the roar. Trust is small yet more powerful.
One UKIP this last week wrote to the Prime Minister to suggest the reason the sea broke through the defences was because of certain new laws of the government. Britain is under God’s judgment. Whether that is true or not, what is true is if we do not trust God then maybe He will make sure we begin to do so.

ON THAT DAY

JEREMIAH 4

3 things to hold on to on that day …v9

Don’t lose the courage to rule and order your life. (The kings)
Don’t lose the ability to minister because of overwhelming fear. (The priests)
Don’t lose the power to speak out. (The prophets)

When the bad news comes.
When the bad day strikes.
Don’t.

Baa!

We all know the Bible refers to us as sheep. Many may think that’s because we are so daft. However, I have just read an amazing story in a 2006 report on a page of the BBC website that clearly suggests sheep are not stupid!

“Last week shepherds in Yorkshire, England, found that they had a group of sheep to care for that were not only stubbornly prone to stray, but also crafty. One of the sheep figured out a way to transgress the boundaries: it laid down and rolled over the grid. The other sheep in the herd followed the example of the stray leader, and soon the sheep had spread over the countryside and found their way to neighborhood gardens, where they ate the food and flowers of local residents.”

JEREMIAH 3
I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding, v15. From this verse we can see 10 keys of a Pastor’s life:

1. Pastors are God-appointed.
2. Pastors are a gift to people.
3. Pastors love their people as a shepherd does their sheep, even if they keep straying.
4. Pastors know they are not alone, carrying the weight of the world, they are plural, there are many of them and they need to recognise this.
5. Pastors pursue the heart of God.
6. Pastors are God-like.
7. Pastors lead people.
8. Pastors are known for their knowledge.
9. Pastors are known for their wisdom.
10. Pastors feed others what they know.
