Lent day 11: Who is Mattatha?
3 v 30 “the son of Mattatha”
We have met a few variants of this name already, this is the 6th one. The name means ‘gift of Yahweh’.
God is still giving gifts today.
The greatest gift is eternal life.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- Spiritual gifts are given, (you are born with natural gifts or they are learnt).
- We can be used to give gifts of God to strengthen the Church.
Romans 1:11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong
- God doesn’t take back the gifts He gives.
Romans 11:29 for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.
- There are different gifts given by God
Romans 12:6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith.
- We can be blind to what is available to us.
1 Corinthians 12:1 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
- We don’t all have the same gifts
1 Corinthians 12:30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
- Gifts to be used for people are not as important as loving people
1 Corinthians 13:2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
- Desiring gifts is good.
1 Corinthians 14:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.
- We need to improve in the use of our gifts that strengthen the Church.
1 Corinthians 14:12 So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church.
- We must not stop using our gifts.
1 Timothy 4:14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
We need to be generous with gifts of money.
2 Corinthians 9:5 So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift, not as one grudgingly given.
Those 3 entities, Salvation, Spiritual gifts and Silver cover Mattatha. Salvation is a gift given by God and is available for everyone for their eternity. Spiritual gifts are given for the edification of the individual and mainly for the Church. Silver are gifts we give to demonstrate Mattatha.
