Have you ever been in a fight you didn’t start and weren’t sure you could finish? A battle that came out of nowhere? A health crisis, a broken relationship or a spiritual dry season, and you ask the question: Is anyone fighting for me?
The Lord has never lost a battle!
“The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.” 10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. 14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.” (Exodus 17 v 8-16)
Joshua fought, Moses prayed, but only God gave the victory over Amalek. It wasn’t Israel is my banner or Moses is my banner, or Joshua is my banner; rather, it was Yahweh-Nissi: THE-LORD-IS-MY-BANNER.
After this amazing victory, Moses built an altar.
It was a prophetic declaration. The altar stood in sight of the community. When future generations asked, “What is that altar?” the answer would be a testimony: “The Lord fought for us here.”
It had a name — Yahweh Nissi. “He called it The Lord is my Banner.” It said: “This is who we fight for, and this is who fights for us.” God Himself is our Banner. We don’t look to our weapons. It is Yahweh and Him alone. Today, it is the cross that is the banner. The cross is the altar. The name of Jesus is our Nissi — the banner we rally to when the battle rages and our arms grow heavy.
It carries a generational promise. “Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.” When the enemy comes against you, he is not just attacking you. He is attacking the one whose banner flies over your life. The banner has not been lowered. Yahweh Nissi has not retired.
Speak the name of Yahweh Nissi over your circumstances, as a faith declaration: “The Lord is my Banner over this marriage, over this illness, over this financial crisis, over this prodigal child.” He was the Banner at Rephidim. He was the Banner at Calvary. He is the Banner today over your home, your heart, your hardest days.
Build your altar. Speak His name. Hold up those around you. And know this above all: the Lord is still at war against every enemy of your soul, and He has never lost a battle.
