When certainty meets the holiness of God

Perhaps the enemy of your life is pressing in hard. It may look like there is no other outcome, and it isn’t what you hoped for. Exodus 15 isn’t just a victory song; it’s a lesson in what happens when human certainty meets divine holiness.

“In the greatness of your majesty you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger;  it consumed them like stubble. By the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up. The surging waters stood up like a wall; the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea. The enemy boasted, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake them. I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword and my hand will destroy them.’ 10 But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters. 11 Who among the gods is like you, Lord?
Who is like you—majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?” (Exodus 15 v 7-11)

See the chilling words of the enemy in v 9. “I will pursue. I will overtake. I will divide. I will gorge. I will destroy.”

As this song is sung, that enemy is no more.

Moses wants the people to celebrate that their enemy is defeated.

But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them (v10).

So what is your enemy at the moment? A diagnosis, an accusation, a circumstance that boasts the way Pharaoh’s army boasted? This song reminds us not to allow anyone to be so certain of the outcome in your life.

Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?

Do you see it? Holiness, not just power. God didn’t drown Egypt because He could. He delivered Israel because He is who He is: a God whose holiness moves toward His people rather than away from them.

That’s the shape the cross would later take too, the love of God breathing life into what looked finished.
